Snow day

What is 18 + 8 + 16?  If you said 42, you're right. It's also the number of inches of snow we've had since December 26. Thankfully there's been a bit of rain and a few days warm enough to melt some of the snow. Still, there's plenty left in our yard.

And on our back deck. That's where I stuck the ruler to measure the snow fall. Couldn't resist opening the door to get this shot.

Even our covered front porch couldn't escape the white stuff. John got out to shovel the front part of the driveway so we could get the van out if needed. After lunch, I got the girls out to play and go sledding.

The December 26 snow had horrendous winds which caused drifts across the yard. The drifts plus John shoveling the driveway has almost obliterated our fence and lends a tunnel-like feeling to the driveway.

At one point, I decided to blaze a trail across a portion of the front yard that hadn't been walked in since the first snow. Now, even though some of you might use the word short to describe my height, I can honestly say that it was still a bit shocking to find myself in snow well above mid-thigh.

The thought that ran through my mind was that if Ellie and Grace weighed enough to actually step on the ground, they'd disappear from sight in this section. A search party would be needed. Hmmm...was Riley home? Could we get him to find the girls? Not sure if he's a hunting dog. Then again, I suspect one could just follow the sound of giggles to locate the little urchins.

Ellie decided to a bit of snow diving was called for.

Thankfully, it was a soft landing.

And what would playing in the snow be without making snow angels?

Due to the abundance of the white stuff, the sledding path was more like a bobsled run.

Grace, ready for another run.

The aftermath...followed by hot chocolate all around.
